Two Legends, One Common Mistake

What Aretha Franklin and Prince Teach Us About Estate Planning

April 15th, 2026

Estate planning is important for everyone, but even the richest and most famous aren’t immune from the consequences of not having a proper plan. Two high-profile examples show just how costly and stressful it can be when a will is missing or unclear.

Aretha Franklin, who passed away in 2018, was initially thought to have left no will. Then multiple handwritten wills were discovered after her death, complicating the Queen of Soul’s estate. This led to years of family disputes and delays in distributing her assets, highlighting how unclear or informal planning can create just as much turmoil as having no will at all.

The American music legend Prince passed away in 2016 without a will, leaving an estate estimated at $156 million. What followed were years of legal wrangling and complex court proceedings. His family faced not only emotional stress but also tens of millions of dollars in legal and administrative costs, all because there was no clear plan in place.

These examples demonstrate a simple truth: without a clear plan, even vast estates can become a source of conflict and expense. The law decides who inherits if there’s no valid will, and disputes can tie up assets for years, leaving families under unnecessary stress.

At Joshua Jacob, we help clients make sure their wishes are clear, their families are protected, and the process is smooth no matter the size of the estate. Don’t leave it to chance: a will gives you and your loved ones certainty and peace of mind.
